Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wondrous and transformative time for both women and men. It brings growth, change, and excitement—but also its share of stress. With the right support and care, the journey can be more peaceful, joyful, and fulfilling.

Reflexology and pregnancy

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that helps reduce stress and tension, supporting balance throughout the body. It is especially beneficial during
pregnancy, when the body undergoes many changes that can cause discomfort. Regular sessions may help relieve common symptoms such as backache, heartburn, constipation, and swelling.

Safe, supportive, and beneficial

For women experiencing a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, reflexology offers a nurturing and supportive therapy. It can help ease common discomforts, encourage relaxation, and promote health for both mother and baby. Reflexology can also provide valuable support with breastfeeding and throughout the postpartum period.

There are some common misconceptions about reflexology during pregnancy—particularly the mistaken belief that it could cause a miscarriage. In reality, reflexology is safe and gentle, and it does not harm a healthy pregnancy.

Reflexology works in harmony with the body’s natural processes, supporting overall wellness rather than influencing pregnancy outcomes. It promotes balance and helps the body function at its best.

Research supporting reflexology in maternity care

Dr. Gowri Motha has developed the Gentle Birth Method over 35 years of clinical practice. Her pioneering work highlights reflexology and its value as a supportive treatment option
throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr. Motha’s research in London demonstrated that women receiving reflexology during pregnancy experienced an average first-stage labor of 5-6 hours, compared to the standard expectation of 16-24 hours.

International research has consistently established reflexology as a safe, non-invasive intervention for maternal care. These research studies demonstrate that reflexology:

- alleviates common pregnancy symptoms,

- reduces duration of labor and decreases pain during delivery,

- addresses postpartum care concerns,

- supports faster and more successful lactation initiation,

- provides emotional support that reduces stress during pregnancy,

- lessens anxiety during delivery,

- helps manage depression and anxiety during the postpartum period.
